The Ruins (2008) 6/10

A group of friends on holiday in Mexico find themselves trapped on a ruined temple by local villagers, not having any understanding why the villagers won’t let them go, but they soon discover that there’s something evil on the ruins, and it wants to kill them and eat them.

This movie was not a patch on the book. The director clearly went for the out and out horror motif when translating the book to the big screen, rather than taking it as a thriller. The characters felt wrong, and the actors were not the best, and the change of the ending was pointless and felt incredibly tacked on. I wouldn’t recommend this to fans of the book, but if you like horror movies in general then it wasn’t too bad.
