Classic Friday : Ace Ventura : Pet Detective (1994) 8/10

Starring : Jim Carrey, Courteney Cox, Sean Young, Tone Loc, Dan Marino
Director : Tom Shadyac
Running Time : 83 mins

Ace Ventura (Carrey), the worlds only pet detective, is called upon to help when the mascot for the Miami Dolphins, and one of their quarterbacks, Dan Marino (himself), go missing. Ace uses all of his expertise to locate the missing dolphin, along the way falling for the Dolphins new manager, Melissa Robinson (Cox), and uncovering a sinister connection between the disappearances and an old Dolphins player, Ray Finkel.

This was the high point of Jim Carrey’s up-to-this-point much overlooked career, and the start of a series of madcap characters that he would play for the next few years. This movie, at first glance, looks like frivolous nonsense, but once you’ve seen it you’ll realise that it is in fact a mystery thriller with a bit of toilet humour thrown in for good measure.
