Five school kids from different backgrounds are given Saturday detention together, where they discover not only do they have a lot more in common than they thought, but that despite their initial differences they have a mutual enemy in the form of Principal Richard Vernon (Gleason). As the day progresses, they start to confide in each other and become good friends, but find it difficult to think that their friendships will last passed Sunday.
When I was younger, I thought this movie was great, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve started to notice some of the problems with this movie, specifically towards the end. The moral of the movie seems to be that looks mean everything, which is made clear by the fact that Andy (Estevez) seems to start a relationship with Allison (Sheedy) only after Claire (Ringwald) gives her a makeover. This is a fun movie, but the ending kind of brought my overall rating down from what could have been a nine or a ten.
