The Exorcism Of Emily Rose (2005) 7/10

Starring : Laura Linney, Tom Wilkinson, Campbell Scott, Jennifer Carpenter, Colm Feore
Director : Scott Derrickson
Running Time : 122 mins

Defence lawyer Erin Bruner (Linney) takes on the case of priest Father Moore (Wilkinson) who is accused of the murder of a young girl named Emily Rose (Carpenter) who dies under his care. His argument is that Emily was killed by the six demons who had taken up residence inside of her, whereas the prosecution claim that she dies as a direct result of not taking her anti epilepsy medication.

This was an interesting horror film in the sense that it didn’t rely heavily on special effects to progress the story line. Instead the director has taken the interesting idea of suffering the repercussions of an exorcism, with the priest in question being accused of murder by the powers that be. There are some good performances here, but some of the court action did get in the way of the story, and some of it could have been easily cut down in parts.
