Lars Lindstrom (Gosling) is something of a loner, living in the garage belonging to his brother Gus (Schneider) and sister-in-law Karin (Mortimer) in a small American town. In an attempt to battle his loneliness, Lars buys a sex doll and, rather than using it for sex, begins treating it as if it’s a real person who he is in a real relationship with. This unusual behaviour is in fact humoured by his community who make every effort to bow to Lars’ beliefs as they love him so much.
This was a really odd movie. Billed as a comedy, this is more of a light-hearted drama which takes the issue of childhood abandonment and fear of relationships and twists it into a slightly comical situation. There are some very funny moments, but the drama keeps the movie grounded in reality and makes for an interesting, though quite peculiar, movie.
