Novocaine (2001) 8/10

Starring : Steve Martin, Helena Bonham Carter, Laura Dern, Scott Caan, Elias Koteas, Keith David
Director : David Atkins
Running Time : 95 mins

Dr Frank Sangster (Martin) is a dentist who finds himself the prime suspect in a series of grisly murders after he prescribes drugs to a patient, Susan Ivey (Bonham Carter), who he had sex with. A mould of his own teeth is being used to leave bite marks on the victims, and it seems there’s nothing Frank can do to clear his otherwise good name.

This is an impressive movie for Martin, who has most recently been wallowing in the realm of cheap remakes and bad comedies. His performance is understated and well suited to this movie, and is quite different to his famous dentist character in Little Shop Of Horrors. This is definitely one of Martin’s better movies of recent years, and as a drama is probably his best work in a long time.
