A family of children who have been sent to live with relatives during World War II discover a Psammead (Izzard), a sand fairy, on the beach who grants them one wish a day, but every wish they make seems to have terrible repercussions, and they soon realise that any wish they make will not turn out how they expect.
I thoroughly enjoyed this adaptation of Edith Nesbit’s classic novel. The story is clearly there to show children that they should be careful what they wish for, but does it in a very subtle way that doesn’t make you feel like you’re being preached to, and Eddie Izzard is wonderfully fun as the Psammead, lending his inimitable comedy style to the character with great effect.
