Ladder 49 (2004) 7/10

Starring : Joaquin Phoenix, John Travolta, Jacinda Barrett, Robert Patrick, Morris Chestnut
Director : Jay Russell
Running Time : 115 mins

As fire fighter Jack Morrison (Phoenix) lies brutally injured in a burning building, he thinks back on some of the decisions he and his colleagues have made over the years that have lead him to his current position, and starts to regret some of the mistakes he feels he’s made in his relationships.

This was a very melancholy movie, with a very downbeat ending. Most of the action takes place in Phoenix’s head, and spans a number of years, showing all the losses he’s been faced with both professionally and emotionally. In spite of this, there’s really just too much emotion in this very sad movie, which could have been a lot better if it had have underplayed the sadness and limited ti to when it was necessary.
