Following a nervous breakdown which came as a result of losing her job, Viola Fields (Fonda) discovers that her only son Kevin (Vartan) is planning to get married to Charlie Cantilini (Lopez), a talented yet flighty young girl who doesn’t meet with Viola’s approval. So, with the help of her long-time assistant Ruby (Sykes), Viola sets about trying to destroy the relationship and get rid of Charlie once and for all.

This was unlikely to be nominated for any Oscars, but is still a very entertaining, over-the-top romantic comedy. Fonda plays the jealous mother brilliantly, although some of the scenarios border on being too over the top to be believable, and Lopez manages to give as good as she gets as the future daughter-in-law.
