Following a successful self-help book launch, John Farley (Scott) returns to his home town to receive a prestigious award only to discover that his mother (Sarandon) is engaged to be married to his old high school gym teacher, Jasper Woodcock (Thornton), the man who made John’s childhood a living hell and inspired him to write his book in the first place.

This is a surprisingly good comedy, but only if you like the sort of humour that finds silliness in other peoples pain. Scott proves that he can play the straight man just as well as he plays the joker, and Thornton plays Mr Woodcock brilliantly. Definitely worth checking out if you like prat falls and general silliness.
