The Quiet American (2002) 6/10

Starring : Michael Caine, Brendan Fraser, Do Thi Hai Yen
Director : Philip Noyce
Running Time : 97 mins

Thomas Fowler (Caine), an aging British reporter, meets serious competition for the affections of Phuong (Yen), a young Vietnamese woman who he has been romancing, in the shape of a young American doctor named Alden Pile (Fraser). Fowler finds himself faced with the fact that he might lose Phuong to the doctor, but soon discovers some terrible truths about the man his lady has become involved with.

Although not long, this was quite a long winded movie, with Caine’s attempts at brooding misery distracting from the actual plot, but it is possible that this was intentionally done to keep people from guessing the true ending. Fraser plays his role to the best of his abilities, once again proving he can handle drama and comedy equally well. This is worth watching the once, but not one to go back to necessarily.
