The Baudelaire children find themselves orphaned and homeless, and are sent to live with their evil uncle, Count Olaf (Carrey), who wants to kill them off and steal their inheritance money. When he fails to kill them, they are sent away to live with a succession of odd relatives, but Olaf disguises himself in the hope of murdering the other relatives until he is the only one still remaining.
This was a thoroughly entertaining children’s film, with a very dark undertone which kids seem to enjoy these days. Carrey is nice and creepy as Count Olaf, almost reminiscent of the Childcatcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and gives the exact right level of being sinister while still being a little over the top so as not to outright terrify children.
