Brother Bear (2003) 8/10

Starring : Joaquin Phoenix, Jeremy Suarez, Jason Raize, Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas, D B Sweeney
Director : Aaron Blaise & Robert Walker
Running Time : 84 mins

In Disney's 43rd Animated Classic, an Inuit hunter named Kenai (Phoenix), whose brother is killed by a bear, seeks vengeance and murders the animal. This act releases an ancient curse which turns him into a bear, and forces him to see the world through the eyes of his victim. His only hope for redemption is to make friends with younf bear cub Koda (Suarez), and learn the true meaning of brotherhood.

I thoroughly enjoyed this rightfully named Disney Classic. It had the wonderful feeling of those Disney movies from the early to mid nineties, but with better characterisation and with a far more surprising ending than anything made before. It’s just a shame that Disney seem to have decided to stop making this kind of film, just when they were finding their footing again.
