Spanglish (2004) 8/10

Starring : Adam Sandler, Tea Leoni, Paz Vega, Cloris Leachman, Shelbie Bruce
Director : James L Brooks
Running Time : 127 mins

Flor Moreno (Vega) and her daughter Cristina (Bruce) move from Mexico to Los Angeles where Flor takes a housekeeping job for a rich family. When she is forced to live with them over the summer, Flor finds herself disliking the behaviour of the mother of the family, Deborah Clasky (Leoni), towards her daughter Cristina and begins to regret her decision to allow her daughter to see how the other half live.

I quite liked this movie. The acting felt natural and fluid, and there was a distinct feeling that we were being shown how different classes live in the USA without being preached to. As usual James L Brooks directs and writes wonderfully, but this movie has largely been overlooked which is surprising considering Brooks’ success with As Good As It Gets.

You’ll like this if you liked : Down To Earth
