Albert Pierrepoint (Spall) is one of Britain’s most high profile hangmen, but as his profession slowly changed over the years, ranging from war time gratitude from the nation to out and out disgust in the middle fifties, Pierrepoint began to greatlt regret his choice of profession, especially when faced with some questionable executions.

This is an incredibly dark and disturbing movie, with some great performances from the cast. Spall is actually very empathetic as Pierrepoint, even at the points where we might think he’s a bit arrogant, and Marsan is very good as Pierrepoint’s friend and associate Tish.
