Set in Franco's Spain during World War II, this movie focuses on the life of a young girl called Ofelia who is sent with her pregnant mother to live with her step-father, a murderous Spanish Captain. While there she meets a faun who sets her three tasks which will allow her to become the princess she once was in a past life.

A strange film, with a lot less fantasy than you might think, this is a wonderfully violent look at gothic fairy tales, where the imagined monsters are far less scary than the real ones.
