Beowulf (2007) 6/10

Starring : Ray Winstone, Anthony Hopkins, John Malkovich, Robin Wright-Penn, Angelina Jolie, Brendan Gleeson, Crispin Glover
Director : Robert Zemeckis
Running Time : 114 mins

A monstrous creature named Grendel (Glover) is terrorising the kingdom of King Hrothgar (Hopkins), so a warrior named Beowulf (Winstone) takes on the challenge of killing the creature, but when he meets Grendel’s mother (Jolie) he strikes up a bargain to become King of Denmark, but with some terrible results.

This was okay as far as it went, and adapted the epic poem well, but the whole CGI nonsense felt over the top and in most cases unnecessary. Although Winstone looked nothing like himself in regards to his build, many of the other actors appeared much as they usually would, beggaring the question as to how logical it is to spend so much money on effects that could be achieved with a simple camera.
