The Man Who Sued God (2001) 7/10

Starring : Billy Connolly, Judy Davis, Colin Friels, Wendy Hughes
Director : Mark Joffe
Running Time : 95 mins

When Steve Myers (Connolly) finds his world destroyed when his fishing boat is struck by lightning and the insurance company refuse to pay out, so as a last resort he decides to sue God and His representative on Earth – the Church. When he announces this, he immediately becomes a worldwide celebrity, as he is seen to represent the little man against the insurance companies who use every loophole in the book to worm out of paying their insurers.

This movie was pretty slow going at first, but it soon picked up and turned into quite a nice tongue-in-cheek comedy, with Billy Connolly doing the best he could with what he was given. He is a bit smug in this movie, but that does mostly add to the overall charm, and Judy Davis is perfect as the reporter writing about him and makes for a perfect partner to his knowingly cynical character.
