During the second world war, Seita (Spencer) and his little sister Setsuko (Chrosite)are sent to live with relatives as a temporary measure after their mother is killed in a bombing raid, but following an argument with their auntie, they leave their new home and decide to try to fend for themselves.

This is such a tragic tale and, much like American Beauty, we already know the destiny of the characters from the start of the movie. Although the characters are loveable and likeable, their inevitable doomed existence is always there, teasing the viewer as they continue to route for them in spite of it being obvious that they will not live to see the end of the film.
