Starring : Julie Andrews, Anne Hathaway, Hector Elizondo, Heather Matarazzo
Director : Garry Marshall
Running Time : 110 mins
Mia Thermopolis (Hathaway) is a total nerd who is teased at school by her peers and has been raised by her single mother from an early age, never having known her father. But when she discovers from her long lost grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi (Andrews), that she is the crown princess of the small country of Genovia, she must choose between her anonymous life in San Francisco or the life of a royal.
I actually thought this wasn’t too bad – it wasn’t patronising anyway, like a lot of teen movies can be. Hathaway and Andrews make a likable screen pair, and Elizondo is a predictable yet likable romantic interest for the Queen, whilst Princess Mia has an obvious romance of her own. Kids and grown-ups alike will enjoy this, so don’t be put off by the Disney production name.
