Classic Friday : Black Christmas (1974) 8/10

Starring : Olivia Hussey, Keir Dullea, Margot Kidder, Andrea Martin, John Saxon
Director : Bob Clark
Running Time : 97 mins

A sorority house finds itself receiving a large number of prank calls, getting to such a point that the girls get the police involved. However, when one of the girls is found dead in the area, the police realise that the prank calls might not be all in fun as they first imagined, and that a serial killer is on the loose...

This is the slasher movie which clearly inspired such popular horror series as Friday The 13th, Halloween and A Nightmare On Elm Street. It has all the set pieces you'd expect of a slasher film; there's young girls getting killed, there's a killer in the house, and the survivor is a girl, but the pacing is a little too slow by today’s standards. However, the acting is strong and consistent, with some credible leads in the form of Olivia Hussey and Margot Kidder, with John Saxon appearing as the policeman investigating prank calls.
