Small town diner waitress Jenna Hunterson (Russell) is horrified to discover that she is pregnant by her abusive and controlling husband Earl (Sisto), and she has to decide whether she wants to keep the child in his presence or get away from him as fast as she can. When she goes for a standard checkup at her local hospital she meets Dr Pomatter (Fillion) and, after a shaky start, the two start an elicit affair with each other.

This is a very sweet movie that manages to remain sweet in spite of the undertone of spousal violence and extra-marital affairs, which is a great testament to the memory of writer-director Adrienne Shelly. Russell keeps her character both likeable and realistic even though she is basically cheating on her husband, but who can blame her when you see what a terrible person Sisto's character really is, especially in the scene where he makes her promise not to love the baby more than she loves him!
