Dark Water (2002) 7/10

Starring : Hitomi Kuroki, Rio Kanno, Mirei Oguchi
Director : Hideo Nakata
Running Time : 98 mins

Single mother Yoshimi Matsubara (Kuroki) and her daughter Ikuko (Kanno) move into their new apartment, only to find water leaking through the ceiling and staining all the surfaces. As Ikuko starts latching onto a mysterious red bag, Yoshimi decides to investigate the leak and discovers that the abandoned apartment upstairs is haunted by a girl who died there years before.

This movie is just as atmospheric as the original Ring movie, but has the tiny flaw of going on for too long. The last ten minutes could have easily been cut from the movie and would actually have improves it. In any case Nakata has managed to repeat his early performances and made a truly suspenseful horror flick that doesn’t so much ram the horror down your throat as slowly feeds it to you.
