The Promotion (2008) 8/10

Starring : Seann William Scott, John C Reilly, Jenna Fischer, Lili Taylor
Director : Steve Conrad
Running Time : 86 mins

Doug Stauber (Scott) has been waiting years to be promoted from his current position as assistant manager at a large Chicago supermarket, so when he hears that a new branch is opening in his neighbourhood he can’t believe his luck. But when Richard Wehlner (Reilly) turns up from Canada, a man with more experience than Doug who also wants the job as manager, Doug realises that he may have to resort to drastic measures to ensure his success.

This is such an under rated comedy that doesn’t even appear to have had a release in the UK. Scott and Reilly are wonderful and neither one overplays the comedy as you might expect. It’s a simple story that has some great characterisation and some great comedy moments, and someone should really get this movie a DVD release over here so that everyone can enjoy it.

I don’t know why I want to route for Richard but he’s a pretty good guy. His wife leaving him because of a joint is ridiculous but I suppose there’s a history with him that we’re not privy to. I don’t get where Doug gets the Dodo book though. He started reading it at the hospital I guess it was there and supposed to be a “Highlights.” I am always looking for the movie I missed in the theater as I am an avid movie watcher but what I like about Blockbuster is that I can always find movies not only rare but 28 days before other movie services. Not only that but the Blockbuster Movie Pass from DISH Network that is free for new customers gives me one bill from DISH, over 100,000 movies plus games, streaming and I also get 20 movie channels on my DISH employee account as a current customer for only $10 a month. Next on my queue is Thor and I don’t have to pay extra for mail to my home, or Blue-ray.
